String Instrument Programs
At Tidewater Strings, we offer professional instruction for violin, viola, and cello to students of all ages and skill levels. Our approach combines classical technique with contemporary styles, ensuring each student develops proper fundamentals while exploring their musical interests.
Our string instruction focuses on proper bowing technique, music reading skills, scales and etudes, and repertoire development across classical and contemporary styles. Whether learning violin, viola, or cello, students develop strong posture, tone production, and musical expression through both solo and ensemble playing.
All instruments are available in multiple sizes to accommodate young students, and we offer rental instruments for students just starting their musical journey. Lessons start at $180/month and are tailored to each student's goals and learning pace.
Family Involvement
For young children, we recommend parents sit in the lesson and know exactly what's being taught and how your choid is receiving the instruction. It's important to have parents be the teacher at home for them. Older kids - 8/9 and up most parents can drop off or wait in our waiting area, and we'll take a couple minutes at the end of the lesson to discuss progress and next steps.

Fiddle Instruction & Performance Experience
Beyond classical training, Mike Williams offers comprehensive fiddle instruction that brings the violin into the world of folk, bluegrass, and contemporary music. Our fiddle program covers traditional techniques and styles, music theory application, improvisation and jamming skills, and folk and bluegrass repertoire. Students gain real-world experience through instructor accompaniment at open mic nights, jamming with other musicians, and applying lessons in live performance settings to build confidence in musical collaboration.
Performance Opportunities: Our instructors actively accompany students to open mic nights around town, providing real-world experience in musical collaboration and helping students apply their theoretical knowledge in live performance situations.
